Simplicity is Our Superpower

We Make Early Childhood Development Clear, Actionable, and Impactful.

“Early Strides was born from a simple yet powerful idea: If a six-year-old can't understand it, it's too complex.”

My Story

My ECD Journey: From Confusion to Clarity

My name is Zukiswa, and my journey in Early Childhood Development (ECD) began when I became a mom. Like many new parents, I wanted the best for my daughters. I dove headfirst into the world of ECD, exploring everything from water births to the latest parenting theories.

But I quickly found myself overwhelmed!

There was so much information, and it often seemed contradictory. I'd read one book telling me to do things one way, only to have another expert say the opposite. It was frustrating and, honestly, a bit scary. I just wanted to do right by my children, but how could I when I couldn't make sense of all this advice?

As my girls grew, so did my passion for ECD.

I decided to become an ECD Teacher, eager to share what I'd learned and help other children and parents. Soon after, I took the leap and opened my own ECD centre. It was exciting, but also incredibly challenging. There were so many rules, regulations, and theories to juggle. I often found myself drowning in paperwork and policy jargon, struggling to have my ECD centre registered (I never did), wondering if I was really making a difference (I was). I then decided to learn everything I could about ECD, volunteering for various roles to gain experience.

My experience and dedication caught the eye of larger organisations.

I began consulting for Save the Children, Cotlands, Mothers2Mothers, etc. I even became an ECD Technical Advisor to the Department of Basic Education: Strategy, Planning & Coordination. I set up learning spaces in unexpected places like hotels, resorts, and gyms, and helped start numerous ECD centres.

Through all of these experiences,

one thing kept nagging at me...

Whether I was talking to parents, teachers, government departments or NGO’s, I saw the same confusion and overwhelm that I had felt as a new mom.

ECD information was often too complicated, complex and filled with big words. People were struggling to understand, let alone implement, best practices for children's early development.

I knew

there had to be a better way.

But it wasn't until I attended an ECD conference that everything clicked into place.

As the conference was wrapping up, a gentleman by the name of Mark Tomlinson took the stage. He started by saying,

"At my age, I can say anything. What I'm about to say will shock you, but I'll say it anyway. I think children from age 6 should be able to vote."

The room erupted in gasps and murmurs. People started arguing why it wouldn't work, listing all the reasons why children couldn't possibly vote. But for every argument, he had a thoughtful counter-point.

Then he said something that made me literally stand up from my seat. He explained that if 6-year-olds could vote, politicians and policy writers would have to simplify their messages so much that even a child could understand. Suddenly, I saw a connection to the ECD world I'd been grappling with.

But here's what really got me. He admitted he didn't really think 6-year-olds should vote. He was making a point about radical, out-of-the-box thinking. He said that for ECD to truly change, we need to stop doing more of the same. We need bold, new ideas.

At that moment, it hit me like a ton of bricks.

In a world where ECD seems to require a Ph.D. to understand, yet alone implement, what could be more radical than simplicity?

As I was pondering this idea, I recalled a time I was presenting a comprehensive ECD programme to a room full of community members. I had spent weeks preparing detailed slides, filled with professional terminology and advanced concepts. I was proud of how sophisticated it looked."

Halfway through my presentation, a grandmother at the back of the room raised her hand. Her words still echo in my mind, “Mtwana wami”,' she said, 'I've raised four children and am raising my grandchild now. But listening to you talk about early childhood, I feel like I know nothing. Are you saying I've been doing it wrong all these years?”

That occasion hit me like a thunderbolt again. Here was someone with decades of childcare wisdom, feeling inadequate because of my complex language. I had become part of the problem I was trying to solve.

Minimalism & Simplicity has always been one of my top 5 personal values, along with:

Personal Growth & Development

Authentic Relationships

Ethical Integrity

and Innovation & Future Focus.

I realised that this was what I could offer the ECD space - a way to make it simpler, clearer, and more accessible to everyone.

A new mission

I left that conference with a new mission: to simplify ECD for EVERYONE. I knew from my own experience as a mother, teacher, consultant and advisor that when we make ECD concepts easy to understand, we empower more people to support children's growth and learning.

That's when I created the

ECD Clarity Compass™.

Our comprehensive approach includes:

  • The Three-Layer Model that maintains depth while improving accessibility

  • The Concept Simplification Protocol that transforms complex ideas step-by-step

  • Visual Mapping Tools that make concepts and processes visible

  • The CLEAR Implementation Framework that moves from understanding to action

  • Measurement & Evaluation approaches that ensure effectiveness

Developed through 16 years of field experience and consistently refined through practice, the ECD Clarity Compass™ methodology has been proven effective across diverse contexts and cultures.

This approach isn't just about making things easier.

It's about opening doors and connecting people. When we simplify ECD, we give parents, teachers, and caregivers the confidence to support children's development. We help policymakers create more effective programmes. And ultimately, we give more children the chance to thrive.

I've seen firsthand the joy on a child's face when they learn something new, and the relief in a parent's eyes when they finally understand how to support their child's growth. That's what drives me every day.

With Early Strides, I'm here to guide you through the ECD maze. I've been where you are. I've felt the frustration of not understanding, the worry of not doing enough. But I've also experienced the incredible impact that clear, simple ECD strategies can have.

My promise to you is this: I will always explain things in simple, clear language. I'll provide practical strategies you can use right away. And I'll be here to support you on your ECD journey.

Because when we simplify ECD, we amplify its impact. And that's what our children deserve.
